This is a really sick idea that I found in the works recently. I am totally stoked on this.the problems:
1. Volkswagens are notorious for breaking down
2. This vehicle fully loaded, will not make it up Teton Pass in the middle of winter.
3. Too many tables and crap that is unnecessary. I would rather pack my cold creek camp chair. I would take out the tables, make sure the batteries in the car were lithium ion.
4. I would probably have to get quite a few lithium Ion batteries to keep any kind of charge that the solar panels received during charging hours. The problem is that the batteries are really expensive.
5. I would fit every appliance in there with energy-efficient ones i-e; electric water heaters that can boil water in less than three minutes, a refrigerator for the beer, cationic space heater for those -40 F nights.
6. I would probably want to mount a Thule box on this monster. Which would make the solar panel incorporated into it, a pain in the ass to deal with. You could theoretically cover the Thule box with solar panels but this would take a lot of time and energy.
7. On top of all of this you would have to find a bio diesel gas station. or get a kit like the one you see here and work out a deal with your local McDonald's or restaurant.
Other than that I don't see too many other problems. When all is said and done, it's probably easier to retrofit your old Volkswagen than buy a new car and then fix the problems. But still inspirational that other people are considering designs like this!!
